About
I am a single mother with 3 beautiful children and I am just starting out as a Freelance Web Designer and this is my story of how I have made Web Development a major part of my life.
Let’s start at the beginning……
I first entered the Web Industry back in 1996 with a company called Netsurf. This is where my journey begins.
A large corporate company decided to do something good for the new generation so they teamed up with a not for profit organistation called Breaking the Cycle. Together they decided to do something unthinkable; form a company with only long-term unemployed youths between 16 – 21 yrs old as employees.
I was one of the lucky 30 chosen for this innovative and extremely risky idea. We were all sent on a trek canoeing, hiking & cycling through Victoria from outside of Lakes Entrance all the way to Buchan to a Health Retreat.
Once there we started on learning who we were and what team work was all about. This was a week of beautiful surroundings and the start of some of the best friendships that I still have today.
We travelled back to Melbourne for an intensive education session with Michael Hewitt Gleeson and his School of Thinking. We then began the first IT Traineeship in Australia based on Web Development. So innovative was this Traineeship that we were even blessed by the Pope via email. (Who would have thought that the Pope was into emails).
After a lot of shuffling from place to place a location was finally found for our office. An old Pub in North Melbourne converted and the walls lined with computers. So there we were, 30 youths, 1 Manager & 3 guys that were Tech Savvy in an old Pub.
What now? Along with Holmes College and our 3 Techies we were taught the basics about the internet from what it was (well I didn’t know) to the beginnings of HTML using Notepad, yes you heard me Notepad.
To be continued……
Yes, yes I know… I still haven't added any more to this story. I am planning on sitting down over the Easter break to write more about my journey in to Web Design, so please bare with me. It will be worth the wait.
